Puducherry port operationalisation may be delayed

Sand has been dumped near the Thengaithittu fishing harbour, narrowing down the passage for fishing vessels.


Port operations likely to begin only in January 2020 after the work is completed.More than a year after the trial run of a cargo vessel, the Puducherry port is yet to be operationalised. The trial run was held in February last year to ensure the smooth movement of the vessel through the sea mouth into the harbour. The port has planned to take up capital dredging under the Centrally sponsored Sagarmala project in October.
Now, it is certain that operationalisation can happen only after the capital dredging is completed.[Readmore]

Maharashtra missed first phase of Rs 2,100 cr national dam safety programme


In April 2012, Maharashtra was conspicuous by its absence in the first phase of a national dam safety programme- the central government’s Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP), Phase-1.

This absence now figures conspicuously amidst the rising death toll due to the breaching of the Tiware dam in Ratnagiri district on July 2.

DRIP Phase-1 was initiated in 2012 with World Bank funding to improve the safety and operational performance of selected dams across the country. Initially, 225 dam projects across seven states, namely, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand were selected and finally, the number was revised to 198 with a funding of Rs. 2,100 crore. No takers in Maharashtra for dam reinforcement technology by Pune-based firm



While states like Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand have used the ‘poly ironite ceramic cementitious (PICC) coating technology for the reinforcement of dams, specifically to prevent breaching, it has been bypassed by Maharashtra.
A technology developed by a Pune firm for the reinforcement of dams that has been endorsed by the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) and utilised by seven states, besides Konkan Railway and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), has been bypassed by the Maharashtra irrigation department. Change in design stalls Maravanthe harbour project 




Mangaluru: The construction of an other fisheries harbour at Maravanthe in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district, based on the Kerala model, that was expected to benifte the fishing community of the region, smells of a scam. The work on the project worth Rs. 54.69 crore began in 2013, but is still not completed.  A major reason was a change of project coordinates mid-way, due to which the project could not be completed with the allocated funds.
